Extreme heat contributes to thousands of emergency room visits each year, and workers in hot indoor environments such as warehouses can face significant heat stress risks during hot summer months.

There are no specific OSHA heat regulations for Florida and Georgia. Yet, the General Duty Clause requires employers to provide working conditions that are “free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees.” That means heat stress safety isn’t just good business; it’s the law.

Employees who must walk across the warehouse to find a water cooler are less likely to drink often enough.
Make cool water accessible throughout the facility, particularly near areas where employees perform strenuous work. Convenience encourages employees to drink regularly rather than waiting until they feel thirsty.
Additionally, make sure your team understands why hydration matters and that taking reasonable water breaks is a critical part of the safety program.
Never pressure associates to skip water breaks.
Workers must exit the heat to recover.
Consequently, a cool-down area is mandatory. It doesn’t have to be a large break room. It could be any air-conditioned room, a well-ventilated area, or another location that provides meaningful relief from the heat.

Finally, your associates need to know how to recognize heat stress.
Training should cover the symptoms of heat-related illness, how to respond when someone begins feeling sick, and when to seek medical attention. Employees should also understand that they are expected to report symptoms rather than trying to push through them.
Supervisors have an especially important role. They should actively watch for signs of impending heat illness and take preventative action, even pulling staff off the line to take extra cool-down breaks.

Effective heat illness prevention usually requires several layers of protection to meet OSHA regulations. Employers are responsible for protecting workers from hazardous heat conditions, including indoors. So, don’t risk safety and compliance on a single tactic.
Review your facility's heat-stress controls.
Look at where heat enters the building, where employees have access to water and cool-down areas, how supervisors respond to symptoms, and whether your current practices adequately protect new and returning workers.
A cooler warehouse isn't just more comfortable. It's a safer warehouse.
